Margaret is the only magical member of a fully muggle family (her brother Randall has never shown any magical ability). Her parents didn't understand what they needed to do when she was sent her letter, and thankfully a nearby neighbor had some knowledge on the subject when they began asking questions.
Her sorting at Hogwarts came as a surprise to many, when she was thrown into Slytherin. Knowing what kind of reputation the house had from her short time on the train, Margaret never spoke of her family or their background. She worked tirelessly, and at the end of her first year managed to be at the top of her year in her house, and has managed to stay there since.
Now entering her 6th year at Hogwarts, she is a very private and humorless person. She doesn't have many friends, and the ones she does have know better than to pry things out of her. She greatly enjoys Arithmancy, because there is a beautiful simplicity in numbers she doesn't manage to find in people. She is an awkward individual.
Her strong magical talent has allowed her to find her niche in Slytherin, and she keeps her families background a secret to avoid questions and ridicule. She aspires to become part of the ministry, and her high results on her O.W.L.S have gotten her some attention from various wizarding groups that wish to take her on.
Despite all her talent, Margaret struggles to fit in with wizards, and even these many years later sometimes wishes that she hadn't ever gotten her letter.
