He's got a pretty good grasp on incantationless magic, and is getting quite decent at wandless magic. Outside of that there's not anything he does paticularly amazing as of today.

Has a messenger owl named Turk.
Fears or weaknesses:
Tends to lack motivation and fails to apply himself wholeheartedly. Your trademark student not being sufficiently challenged by school syndrome. It takes a lot to push him into action. He fears chaos and the threat of another great dark wizard, doesn't genuinely believe that peace will last when Grindelwald and Voldemort happened in rapid succession. Is very clever, which in itself isn't bad, but the fact that it manifests itself in being a smartass and occasionally a know it all is a fault. Doggedly loyal a fault, probably won't believe a bad thing about someone he likes until it's biting him in the ass.
Likes and dislikes:
He likes naps, his peace and quiet, and a general calm in general, if he can get away with it a chill day without any real problems or annoyance is pretty good in his mind. He also tends to like and gravitate towards interesting people, regardless of personality. Dislikes hecticness and loudness, from his surrounding area or people. Isn't too big on people who are rude or tend to atagonize others.

A nice chill day hanging out at Hogsmeade with his friends,

Father: Pendelton Thatcher, a pureblood wizard whom chose to marry a muggle a move that ostracized him from his peers, but after Voldemort fell he soon found himself returning to the wizarding community hoping their attempts to better relations were true.
Mother: Samantha Thatcher nee Ward, a kindly muggle woman who instilled the sense of contentment with peace in James at a young age. Though she tries her best to intergrate with the wizard community she can't help but find herself feeling a little out of her element.
And a sole sister named Abigail, whom has yet to show any magical aptitude, but is still fairly young.
Background and/or back story information important to your character’s plot line:
Having been born to a fairly normal family in the middle of York, not much of eventfulness happened to him, his mother was fully aware of the world her husband had come from so his magical aptitude came as no surprise to her, nor did the Hogwarts acceptance letter that came the night of his eleventh birthday.
A clever, but lazy boy. The sorting hat deemed him fit for Hufflepuff, Slytherin and Ravenclaw, but ultimately settled on Hufflepuff. A lack of ambition and cunning kept him from Slytherin and he lacked the studious, aggressive need to be on the cusp of intelligence for Ravenclaw. Sorted to Hufflepuff he soon became one of their top students, simply from his cleverness, held back only by his almost comical disdain for applying himself. Because of this intersection though, he tends to hang out with a disportionate amount of Slytherin and Ravenclaw than the average hufflepuff.
Life was fairly commonplace and uneventful for the lad, until he turned 15. Accidentally stumbling onto a battle between the Aurors and remanants of Death Eaters and the ensuing conflict instilled in him his fear of another great wizarding conflict. If a battle between the last gasp was this violent and fervent, how must the actual battles have been. It's something he'd prefer never to have to find out, but given the frequency of the dark wizards and general bigoted nature of the community he fears it will be unavoidable that he took will be found in the midst of this madness.
As another direct result of that event, it finally gave him a direction to take himself. Determined to better the magical community, James decidedly busts his hump to garner the highest O.W.Ls and N.E.W.T he could in an effort to work his way into the ministry and reform the muggle department to make a better future for the muggleborns, half bloods and muggles whom stumbled into the world through no power of their own.
